50,000 Unstoppable Watts by Clutch

It’s hard to believe that Maryland based band Clutch has been around for almost 20 years and still rocks this hard. The track 50,000 Unstoppable Watts is from their 9th studio album titled Strange Cousins From The West and was released back in July.

Crackalacka by Left Lane Cruiser

20 years from now will everyone be waxing poetic about this period in time as yet another great blues revival? Think of all the bands right now in the genre – Kings of Leon, The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, Super 400, The Black Keys, Band of Skulls, the list goes on and on. While we can’t foresee the future, we can tell you that Left Lane Cruiser is a two-man blues outfit worth listening to right now. Crackalacka is the first track from the bands third release (due 9/29/09) titled All You Can Eat.

The track gets right down to business with the kind of slinky slide guitar and frighteningly raw vocals that we’ve come to expect from Freddy Evans and is whipped into a frenzy by the firecracker drumming style of Brenn Beck. As Evans alternates between greasy power chords and slide licks, Beck continues to lay down a relentless beat until the song ends.

    Debaser by Pixies

In honor of the honor of the upcoming Pixies Doolittle tour (you’re going right?…right?), I thought I’d post the first track off of Doolittle today – Debaser.

A little background on the song: the lyrics are based on a French surrealist film by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí called Un chien andalou. The film notoriously opens with a scene in which a woman’s eye is slit by a razor, which is referenced in the song lyric “Slicin’ up eyeballs/I want you to know.” According to Black Francis:

I wish Buñuel was still alive. He made this film about nothing in particular. The title itself is a nonsense. With my stupid, pseudo-scholar, naive, enthusiast, avant-garde-ish, amateurish way to watch Un chien andalou (twice), I thought: ‘Yeah, I will make a song about it.’ [He sings:] “Un chien andalou”…. It sounds too French, so I will sing “un chien andalusia”, it sounds good, no?.

The title “Debaser” references the fact that Un chien andalou debases morality and standards of art, according to Black Francis. In the earliest version of the song, the line “un chien andalusia” was originally “Shed, Appolonia!”–a reference to the co-star in the Prince film Purple Rain.

How I Got Over by The Roots

The Roots are releasing their 11th album on October 20th titled How I Got Over. Linked below is the title track off the album. I’ve heard a few other tracks off the album as well, this is definitely one worth picking up despite the fact that Jimmy Fallon is intent on turning them into a late night house band.

    Allure by Jay-Z (Ratatat Remix)

I just can’t get enough Ratatat lately. This remix of Allure comes off of Ratatat Remixes Vol. 2. We don’t know how Ratatat does it but they have the uncanny ability to take a fairly mundane track and catapult it into outer space with crazy beats and guitar riffs. It’s not like what they do has never been done before, but we just can’t think of anyone who’s doing it better right now.

Also of note is the fact that Ratatat released a new album titled LP3 a few weeks ago. You can find all the Ratatat albums here or on iTunes.

Let Me Die In Southern California by The Voyces

Southern Californa based The Voyces will be releasing a new album titled Let Me Die In Southern California on September 28th. A while ago the band moved to NYC and recently moved back to SoCal — a fact that definitely comes through on the title track presented below. It seems to have a Eagle-esque feel to it with more edge – in fact Hotel California comes to mind which isn’t a bad thing (unless you’re the Dude) as summer fades here on the East Coast.
